This headline was repeated by Obama in his quest to knock the private sector.
I found what I think is the source of his “facts”, from Mike Hall, an AFL-CIO blogger:
http://blog.aflcio.org/2009/05/27/health-insurance-profits-soar-as-...
Here’s an email that I sent him, and I'm going to copy Obama. Why don't we all harrass them with chastising emails?
Hey Mike,
Health Insurance Profits Soar as Industry Mergers Create Near-Monopoly
Makes a jazzy headline - bound to rile the folks who read it. And now Obama is even spreading the word for you – without the facts, just like his “Cambridge cops are stupid” remark.
Cronkite wouldn’t report hype as fact like most of today’s “journalists”, including yourself. But then, he was a professional – with professional ethics.
A few years back, and again just last year, it was all the rage to pounce on Exxon for exorbitant profits. They were about 10% to Merck’s 25+%.
I didn’t see any data to back up your report (428% of what?), so I went and found it myself:
Net profit comparison as of 31 Mar 09:
United Health Insurance 3.7%
Merck Pharmaceutical 27.0%
Exxon/Mobil 7.1%
Monsanto 22.0%
If you want to railroad an industry out of business, why not start with pharmaceuticals, followed by Monsanto? And get congress to bring their pitchforks and help!
Cronkite was a liberal, but many who worked with him didn’t even know it - because he had the journalistic ethics to leave his personal beliefs at home and report the facts. Maybe you should take a refresher course.
